TheatreOne’s Fringe Flicks Six New Films for 2018
Six new films have been selected for the second half of the Fringe Flicks series, with a line-up of independent, award-winning films that is sure to entice all the film lovers in the region.
The first film of 2018 is on January 14 and 15, The Other Side of Hope, a funny, heartfelt story about the Syrian refugee crisis from Aki Kaurismäki, the Finnish master of deadpan comedy.
Next up is Lucky, on January 28-29, about a fiercely independent 90-year-old atheist named Lucky who finds himself thrust into a late-in-life journey of self-exploration.
Third to be screened is Faces, Places (Visages, Villages) on February 18-19, in which director Agnes Varda and artist JR travel to villages in France, producing epic-sized portraits of the locals.
The fourth film is Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, on March 11-12. This stars Annette Bening in a memoir about British actor Peter Turner that recounts his romance with Hollywood star Gloria Grahame.
The Breadwinner on March 25-26 is a beautifully animated feature produced by Angelina Jolie. This film tells the extraordinary story of an Afghan girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to save her family.
The final flick of the season is the Canadian film Meditation Park, on April 15-16. This movie is about a devoted wife and mother (Cheng Pei Pei) who is forced to reassess her reverence for her husband after she finds a woman’s thong in his laundry. This hilarious, touching film also stars the much–loved Canadian actress, Sandra Oh.
